Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
What is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and what are its benefits?
Minimally invasive spine surgery is the execution of surgery through small incision(s), usually with the aid of endoscopic visualization (i.e., small devices or cameras designed for viewing internal segments of the body). Minimally invasive techniques have changed many surgical procedures - including spine surgery. Surgeries that used to result in week-long hospital stays, a long recovery period and large scars have been diminished to a few days, a significantly shorter recovery period and much smaller scars. Dr. Hellman is trained and experienced in minimally invasive procedures for spinal surgery and utilizes the minimally invasive approach when appropriate.
Medical conditions that often lend themselves to minimally invasive surgical techniques include, but are not limited to:
- Spinal fusion performed on degenerative discs
- Repair of herniated discs
- Spinal deformity corrections, such as for scoliosis
Note: minimally invasive procedures are not suitable for all spinal procedures nor are the procedures suitable for all patients; your physician can advise you regarding which type of procedure is best for your condition.
